Food Marvellous Food!

We think that providing quality nourishing food is absolutely essential. SOS is such a full on experience for most people. Going to series of workshops talking about the challenges that the current social, economic and governance paradigm presents us with, and what we can do to start, continue and sustain change can be challenging and draining, whilst simultaneously exhilerating and empowering. Meal times provide a regular break for people to sit, relax, chat, reflect and eat some delicious food in order to gain the physical and spiritual energy to get as much out of SoS as possible.

In order to create a truly sustainable conference, we are aware that we need to be as sustainable as possible in our practices, not just our workshops. We understand that food is a big issue in creating a sustainable world, and therefore we have established a set of guidelines for the provision of food that will be followed during the conference.

Here they are, for your viewing pleasure :)

All food from the main kitchen will be strictly vegan. No animal products of any kind. This includes dairy, eggs and honey. There will be non vegan food available for Indigenous delegates at the Indig kitchen. There will also be other food outlets on Murdoch campus for those who feel unable to cope with eating vegan for the 5 days of the conference.

We wanted all food to be organic, but were simply not able to do this on our budget, so we have selected to buy fruit, museli and salad greens organic as they are eaten raw and have a considerable difference in terms of nutrition and taste.

All ingredients (including organic) are locally sourced where ever possible. We have tried to avoid ingredients that are not available from local growers, but it is not always possible or practical to cook completely from locally sourced foods. Buying local food cuts down on the food miles created by buying imported goods whilst also supporting local growers.

There will be a gluten free option for every meal for coeliacs or people with wheat allergies. We will be providing a delicious alternative to whatever everyone else is having (You need to tell us NOW if you need gluten free food).

Our menus must take into account cost efficiency. We are essentially a volunteer organization which relies on funding and donations to put on this important event. Therefore, we need to keep our costs as low as possible. So whilst we will not be providing gourmet meals, we will be making them as delicious as we can!!!!!

Each meal will be nutritiously balanced. We understand that it is important to provide enough protein and nutrients to keep our attendee’s minds and bodies able to last the distance.

If you are attending the conference and you have special dietary requirements, you need to let us know ASAP so we can cater for you.
