SOS Letter

Students of Sustainability (SoS) is the largest environmental and social justice based conference in Australia. Each year SoS offers an important opportunity for Indigenous groups, students, activists, academics, artists, musicians and members of the wider community to come together to share and to celebrate, gain knowledge and practical skills.
In 2007, we aim to accommodate over 600 people to participate in a week of forums, workshops, skill shares and field trips concerned with environmental and social justice issues.

The conference will be held at the University of Western Australia, during the mid-semester break - Monday the 9th to Sunday the 15th of July.

In recent years, SoS has been an important time for Indigenous Elders to speak, network and communicate about important issues. Indigenous Activists and Academics have a forum to speak about community concerns and campaigns and to educate the non-indigenous community.
(who we are sending the letter to) are invited to join the organising group or to participate in the S0S2007 conference.
Building relationships between the Indigenous and non- Indigenous communities is of fundamental importance to the organisers of the SoS conference. In order to support this process, a group of students and activists have come together to form a group to oversee and facilitate this process on behalf of the SoS organising collective.

We would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to Indigenous communities and individuals to be involved with the organising of the SOS07 conference. This invitation intends to welcome Indigenous people to join our organising group in the process of creating a space for Indigenous people at SOS to connect together and communicate with the non-Indigenous community.

There are many different roles involved in the organising of this conference. If someone has a special interest in an area, we believe the conference has a role for you.

We would welcome Indigenous workshops, lecturers and art installations. Other roles include:
Cooking and hospitality,
International Speakers,
Social and Environmental Activism,
'Activate Tree Planting',
workshop facilitation,
a 'Rock against Racism' music event
or seeing to the needs of our Indigenous visitors.

These are just a few of the many roles to be filled.

Please feel free to contact any of us if you have and questions, concerns or interest.
