ANAWA releases election scorecard

GREENS/DEMS:A+ LIBS: FAIL LABOR:PASS ONE NATION: SURPRISE RESULT

21 November 2007

The Anti Nuclear Alliance today released their scorecard on candidate’s positions in relation to nuclear power, uranium mining, waste and international relations.
“In the absence of any Liberal candidates bothering to engage with our community questionnaire they get a big fat ‘F’. As has been the way with much of the campaign the Liberals were missing in action on the important issues,” said ANAWA spokesperson Nicola Paris.

“Although we were interested in hearing from each candidate whether or not they would support a nuclear reactor in their electorate, as opposed to standard party policy, even strident pro-nukers such as Dennis Jensen failed to respond.
The Democrats, Greens and Socialist Alliance all got top scores with Greens ongoing involvement in the grassroots anti nuclear movement being noted as well.

“The ALP scraped by with a pass for their opposition to nuclear power plants, the proposal to re-establish the Canberra Commission towards disarmament and their call for troops out of Iraq – they lost points for their peculiar stance that nuclear is not OK in Australia, but exporting uranium to facilitate it elsewhere in the world is fine.

One Nation were the surprise result with relatively high scores. Although we would disagree on many social justice issues, a number of their candidates were strong in opposition to the nuclear fuel cycle and believed the troops should come out of the Middle East.”

Scattered results were also received from Family First, Christian Democrats and the Citizens Electoral Council and a couple of independents.

“Bonus demerit points were allocated to Senate independent Graeme Campbell who is proudly pro the entire nuclear fuel chain, including depleted uranium, however he didn’t support the proposed radioactive waste dump in the NT – instead he thought we should import the worlds waste into West Australia!” finished Ms Paris.
