WA ANTI NUKERS WELCOME NUCLEAR PROHIBITION
16 NOVEMBER 2007
The Anti Nuclear Alliance of WA (ANAWA) today congratulated the State Government for the passage of its legislation through the lower house outlawing nuclear power plants in the state.
“We welcome the legislation at a state level, and commend the state Labor government for their strong stance against the nuclear industry,” said ANAWA spokesperson, Jo Vallentine.
“It is the state government that is reflecting the wishes of the majority of West Australian people in this instance – a stark contrast to the out of touch federal Coalition who want to impose nuclear reactors and waste dumps on unwilling communities.
“The Australian public simply don’t trust the nuclear industry – with good reason. And they don’t appear to trust the Howard government much anymore either.
“Despite Howard’s hand picked committee coming up with a glowing pro nuclear report, and months of rhetoric, he was still forced to state that communities would have the right to vote on the location of power plants. Is that a core promise Mr Howard?”
The Anti Nuclear Alliance (WA) are continuing with their election campaign against nuclear power, but will also work to remind the state government about uranium mining.
“We would like to take this opportunity, though, to remind the government that the majority of people in WA also don’t support uranium mining, and we are still waiting on them to legislate against mining so we have firm commitments in that area as well. We also need them to complete the legislative process and pass the nuclear prohibition legislation in the Upper House urgently,” concluded Ms Vallentine.
